Created for elementary and secondary Arts, Language Arts and Social Studies/History.
The selected websites are about the First Nations throughout Canada. On the websites Aboriginals: Treaties & Relations and Fur Trade Stories, students can examine how the history of Aboriginal peoples has been deeply altered by their relations with Europeans, and can learn about how Aboriginal people have lived off the land from before their contact with Europeans to the present day. On the McCord Museum: Collection Search, Cybermuse, and Oracle websites, students can look at artifacts and the works of contemporary artists, learn about the life and culture of Inuit, examine the work images taken by anthropologists and researchers, and play games. On the Learning Through the Arts: Lesson Plans website, teachers can access interdisciplinary lessons with Aboriginal themes such as mask-making, medicine, the solar system, and food chains, through stylized art. On the CBC Archives for Teachers websites (Phil Fontaine: Native Diplomat and Dealmaker; The Battle for Aboriginal Treaty Rights; Georges Erasmus: Native Rights Crusader; Eeyou Istchee: Land of the Cree; An Inuit Education: Honouring a Past, Creating a Future; James Bay Project and the Cree; and Davis Inlet: Innu Community in Crisis), students can access radio and television clips pertaining to issues such as resistance, territorial rights, education, and poverty.
